In terms of ” America, Russia and Cold War” February 21, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Min @ 10:10 pm

Well, I didn’t finish the book. Part of the reason is that its content was different from what I thought. It’s more a historical review of what happened during the cold war than a more thorough analysis. But it’s a very interesting book in a way that it tells a lot of stories we never knew of. The relationship between US, Russia, Europe and countries such as China are incredibly interesting. Every single important decision makers during that period time had a somewhat vivid characteristics in this book. You really have to think when you are reading otherwise you won’t get the mind behind some of the sentences.

Anyway, if someone ever interested in the history, and the relationship of the major players during and post cold war, they should read this book.

The Plan For 2008 By. Rouslan January 14, 2008

The most important goal is to love my honey dearly, of course. But that will be easy given her incredible cuteness.

A major goal is to go to grad school this year. I filed the applications for Masters degrees in December 2007. All I can do now is wait. The long term goal is a PhD and a job in a think tank like Rand Corporation or a research university. The direction for research is yet undecided, but is likely to involve economics or bioinformatics.

Self control is very important. I need to manage my time. The time must be spent enriching the intellect through books, speaches, conferences, and discussions. The posts below indicate my reading selection. TED is my choice for talks. LibriVox is my choice for audio books to listen when I travel.

The plan for 2008 by. Min January 13, 2008

2007 was a fairly productive year. I got my Bachelor’s degree, got a job offer, several grad school offers, rejected the job offer, and several grad school offers and I end up here at CMU.

I am still looking for changes. Changes that will bring excitement back into my life. I saw teh trailer of ” The Bucket List” at the movie theater the other day. I think it’s a brilliant idea to also create a plan for spending my year of 2008 productively and achieve something great. It will be a significant year for me for sure and I need to spend every single day wisely.

- I want to find a great internship. Doesn’t matter where it is. I want to go out and see the world. I  haven’t been to  many places but traveling around the world will definitely be the one item that I will list on my Bucket List. haha

- I want to learn a new language. I was joking with RD the other day that I want to be able to speak seven different languages after this year. That was achievable only if I  don’t have to study over 60 units of  courses and without a job.  So I  decided to set a more realistic goal - one language. I am setting my eyes on French but maybe latin as well.

- I want to do one thing that I fear about. Public speaking is something that I always try to improve so I contacted professor at Tepper to see if I can take a public speaking course. I will also take strategic presentation skills this semester.

- I  want to go back to China visit my friends and family.  This is  kinda luxury but  I really want to go home to take a break.

- I want to pick up my so far dropped hobby of reading. Well, that’s why I started writing this blog again.

- This one is a little hard to achieve but I will work on it. I hope I can get A+ for all of my courses this semester. I managed to get one last semester but I would like to get as many as possible this time.

Basic Economics

Basic Economics

This is the book I am reading now. It is a good introduction to economics for laymen, albeit too wordy. The best lesson I have learned so far is that price ceilings do not benefit the poor.

GRADUATION 真的结束了 May 31, 2007
